Odil Ahmedov

Anzhi Makhachkala midfielder Odil Ahmedov has claimed he wants to join Arsenal, according to a report in the Daily Mail.

The Uzbekistan enforcer has previously been linked with a move to the Emirates and the Mail suggests that the Gunners have been tracking the midfielder for some time and considered making their interest official last summer.

The 24-year-old enjoyed an excellent season with Anzhi Makhachkala and was voted as their player of the season for 2011, despite the big-spending Russians bringing in the likes of Samuel Eto’o and Yury Zhirkov.

Quoted in the Daily Mail, Ahmedov has revealed his desire to play in England or Spain and sounded out Arsenal as his preferred destination.

‘I’m really happy to be playing at Anzhi, but I want to try England or Spain,’ he said.

‘All the clubs in Spain and England are wonderful, but I would like, if I had the choice, to play for Arsenal.’

Ahmedov is a 6ft defensive midfielder, who is also comfortable playing at centre back, and may be considered by Arsene Wenger should his move to land Rennes ace Yann M’Vila fall through.
