Mohamed Diame has claimed he came close to joining Liverpool before Kenny Dalglish was sacked, leaving Arsenal and Tottenham in pole position to sign him.

The Senegal midfielder is available on a free transfer this summer after running down his contract at Wigan Athletic, after failing to hold down a regular spot in Roberto Martinez’ side.

The Daily Mail claim that several Premier League clubs are interested in his services, with the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham and Aston Villa thought to be in the running, as well as La Liga outfits Real Betis and Malaga.

Sky Sports News reported that the midfielder will leave the Senegal camp this week to hold talks with interested parties, and the 24-year-old has revealed that he held discussions with former Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish over a move to the Reds, but the Scot’s sacking ended his hopes of a move to Anfield.

“I met before Kenny Dalglish and we talked about next season, but God decided to finish this situation,” Diame told Sky Sports News.

“It is true I was very sad in my head as I was thinking to go there, but that is OK as I think I have got other opportunities to go to another club.”

Diame went on to confirm he has interest from clubs in Spain, France and Turkey, but he’d prefer to stay in the Premier League.

“I am free and not everybody is free in this moment like a midfield player like me and that is why I have got a lot of clubs interested in me,” added Diame.

“I have to be composed and make a good decision for my future.

“I have got some offers from Spain, from France, from Turkey, but I really want to stay in the Premier League.”

With Liverpool out of the running, it paves the way for Arsenal or Tottenham to snap up the talented midfielder on a free transfer. The only stumbling block could be the players desire for first team football, which may be hard to come by at either North London club.

If he’s willing to play a bit part role at Arsenal or Tottenham, then i can see Diame being a decent addition to either squad. If not, then we’re likely to see him move to a side like Aston Villa.
