Arsenal Transfer News: Giroud Delay’s Move Talks

Montpellier striker Olivier Giroud will decide his future after the European championships, amid speculation Arsenal want to take him to the Emirates this summer

Montpellier-Olivier-Giroud

Reported Arsenal target Olivier Giroud will decide his future after this summers European championships.

Giroud scored 21 goals in 36 appearances to help fire Montpellier to an unlikely Ligue 1 title last season, and this form has alerted some of Europe’s top clubs.

The striker has been strongly linked with a move to the Gunners in recent weeks , with talkSPORT suggesting Arsene Wenger had already offered Montpellier £6.5m plus Marouane Chamakh for the French hitman.

Wenger is thought to have been tracking the 25-year-old for some time and is tempted by the players relatively low value, due to a £15m release clause in his contract, but any deal may be dependent on the future of Gunners skipper Robin van Persie, who is also considering his future this summer.

Giroud will be part of the French squad at this summers European championships and he has claimed he will wait until after the tournament before deciding on his future.

“I am calm and I know I’m on the market.

“But I have a contract with Montpellier and after Euro 2012 we will value the various offers and decide which is best for us all.”

FT Verdict

I’m not sure what to make of the Giroud rumour. After bringing in Podolski, it would be very un-Wenger-like to sign another forward.

Giroud is an out-and-out striker and is also left footed, so i couldn’t see him coming to play alongside fellow left-footers RVP and Poldi, and it’s unlikely he’ll be willing to leave title-winning Montpellier to be a bench warmer at Arsenal. So the only way i can see Giroud coming to Arsenal is if it’s to replace Robin van Persie.
