Vermaelen - Gunner for life

Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen has given the club a boost by declaring he would like to spend the rest of his career at the Emirates.

The 26-year-old has become an important part of the Gunners back-line since making the move to London from Ajax in 2009, and has gone on to make 67 appearances for the club.

Ahead of this Saturday’s friendly against England, the Belgian defender has ruled out a move away from the club, declaring that he want’s to remain with Arsenal for the rest of his career.

Quoted by Sky Sports News, Vermaelen said:

“I will stay at Arsenal forever. There will be no transfer for me,”

“I love London. I’ve got a house there, I’m happy there and I don’t see any reason to ever leave the club.”

At a time when the futures of players like Robin van Persie and Theo Walcott are unclear, and during the days when players and agents regularly spout off in the media pushing for transfers, it’s refreshing to hear an important first team player like Vermaelen saying he’s happy at the club and willing to see out his career here.

Vermaelen showed how it’s done by committing to Arsenal when he signed a contract extension months ago. I just wish there were a few more like him in the game.
