Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has been forced to close his Twitter account and contact police after Twitter trolls claimed he had failed a drugs test.

Wilshere missed the entire 2011/12 season with an ankle injury that he picked up in pre-season last August. He was initially ruled out for 3-4 months but a set back in the new year meant further surgery which ended his season, and with it, ended any hopes of representing England at this summer European championships.

However, outrageous accusations were aimed at the 20-year-old last week when Tweets from two Twitter accounts claimed he had failed a drugs test and the rumours spread over the internet. What had Wilshere apparently been taking? Was it some cough medicine? Perhaps some super-strength fat loss products? Nope, they claimed he had tested positive for cocaine!

A wave of abusive messages flooded in to Wilshere and his girlfriend Lauren Neal forcing them to close their Twitter accounts and according to the Sun, the midfielder has now contacted the police and saved the Tweets as evidence.

A friend of Wilshere told the Sun:

“Someone is spreading hateful lies and he and Lauren have decided enough is enough.

“Most of the abuse was the kind of stuff he hears on the terraces. But it has got more personal.

“The stuff about the drug test was the final straw — he would never take drugs.”

“It’s upsetting that someone can be so vile.”

Arsenal lawyers have also been made aware of the incident and they said:

“The rumoured reason on social networks behind Jack’s absence this past season is entirely fabricated and false.”

It’s disgusting that a young footballer could potentially have his reputation tarnished by some idiot’s on a social network who have nothing better to do than spread lies on the internet.

It’s just another example of people thinking they can say what they like on the net without repercussions. Hopefully the police can track down the trolls and take appropriate action against them.
