[Teams] England vs Sweden: Carroll Comes In For Dropped Oxlade-Chamberlain

By on June 15, 2012

As expected, Liverpool striker Andy Carroll has replaced Arsenal youngster Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain for England’s Group D second round tie with Sweden tonight.

Carroll will make his competitive debut for his country and has been drafted in by Roy Hodgson for his aerial threat due to Sweden’s apparent weakness in the air, with both of Ukraine’s goals coming from Shevchenko headers during their 2-1 win on Monday.

Chamberlain may feel a little unfortunate to be making way having put in an assured display against France on Monday, but the youngster will be a threat from the bench should he be called upon.

Ashley Young moves over to left wing as England go for a more traditional 4-4-2 formation. Here are the confirmed teams:

England Team

Hart, Johnson, Terry, Lescott, Cole, Milner, Gerrard, Parker, Young, Carroll, Welbeck.

Sweden Team

Isaksson, Granqvist, Mellberg, Olsson, Olsson, Svensson, Kallstrom, Larsson Ibrahimovic, Elm, Elmander

I hope playing Milner is not a mistake. Walcot would of been a better choice. Milner did not play much for City yet gets in ahead of Walcott who’s played this role all season and was a success at it against City and for the whole of the season. I also hope we have not gone backwards on that great performance against France. I think changing the team was odd. Long ball has never worked for us no matter how hard we try.

1st half done. The weakest link is Young followed by Milner. Great choice with Carroll. If we do not punish Sweden then they will punish us. I think the Ox and Theo can do the defensive work the other 2 are doing. I dont understand that if you are right footed and its open to cross with it why cut back and cross with your weaker foot. (its almost as though Milner is trying to show off his abilities) I suspect he will drag them off soon. But I really hope thay be smarter on the ball. Danger men Elmander Ibra and Svensson and that free kicking Arsenal reject.

WOW we done it. Worst player tonight is Young followed by you guessed it Milner.I really do not want to see those 2 again.(maybe right back for Milner cause thats all he is)Its a insult for Milner and Young to come ahead of Downing, Walcott and the Ox. Wasn’t Milner part of the flops of 2010?
To be fair to Roy he’s new to the team and I hope he’s learnt that Milner and Young will let him down. Walcott always rises to the occasion and its Welbeck and not Young to partner Rooney. Its a shame they did not play well because they could of left Rooney out but almost losing to a poor side is not good enough.(someone has to be dropped) I do think Carrol played well but Welbeck scored the winner and thats all that matters.
