Liverpool are interested in £6.5m-rated Athletico Madrid midfielder Raul Garcia, according to the Daily Mail.

The report claims that Athletico sources have indicated that two Premier League clubs have shown interest in signing the 25-year-old this summer, with one understood to be Liverpool.

Garcia has been told he can leave Athletico after falling out-of-favour with manager Diego Simeone, and is set to bring to an end a five year stay at Madrid.

Athletic Bilbao are also keen to land the midfielder, but are struggling to meet the players after-tax £30,000-a-week wage demands; the kind of money he could easily command at Anfield.

The former Spain under 21 international spent last season on loan at former club Osasuna, where he recaptured some of the form that persuaded Athletico to pay £9m for him in 2007, as he scored 11 goals in 32 games.

FT Verdict

Garcia would be a decent addition to Brenden Rodger’s squad and would provide a much-needed goal-threat from midfield. At £6.5m he would also be a shrewd buy, so if the Reds can pull this one off, we see it as being a good piece of business.

However, we would suggest an air of caution before getting too excited by this piece of transfer gossip. The Daily Mail story has very little substance and is lacking any real proof that Liverpool are interested.

Raul is great-only when you play him in the right position. The reason why he failed at Atleti was because they threw him a role he wasn’t comfortable with. He succeeded with Osasuna because they managed to accommodate him to their squad.
