Tottenham midfielder Luka Modric is closing in on a move to Spain, according the players friend Mate Bilic.

The Daily Mail report that Modric is looking to leave White Hart Lane this summer in search of champions league football, and while the club don’t want to lose the midfielder they might be forced in to selling if a bid of £35m comes in.

Manchester United and Chelsea have long been linked with the 26-year-old but the players friend and former team-mate Mate Bilic has claimed that Modric wants to play in Spain, and is close to agreeing a move to La Liga.

‘I’m very good friends with Modric,’ said the Sporting Gijon striker.

‘He wants to play in the Spanish league. He loves the Premier League but he wants to play in Spain. He’s very close to agreeing a move.’

This news comes amid reports that Real Madrid are interested in the Croatian and the Mail claim that Jose Mourinho is desperate to pair Modric up with Xabi Alonso in the middle of the Madrid midfield.

Former Croatia and Madrid striker Davor Suker has also been talking up the possibility of Modric moving to the Bernabeu, saying he would be a perfect fit for the La Liga champions and suggested he could end up at Man City or Chelsea if a move to Real doesn’t come off:

‘Luka Modric is a player who could play for Real Madrid. He needs to be playing for a team that will win trophies. He’d be perfect for them.

‘I would recommend that Florentino Perez signs him. If he doesn’t sign for Real Madrid, he’ll end up at Manchester City or Chelsea. He has to leave Tottenham to win trophies.’

Suker is quoted as saying in the Daily Mail

Modric was then quizzed by reporters about Suker’s comments, and the Spurs player responded positively saying:

‘I am proud he thinks I could be a Real Madrid player. It’s good. I thank him a lot for his words.’

Tottenham fans will be dreading another Modric transfer-saga this summer, but after cruelly missing out on champions league football next season and losing manager Harry Redknapp, it looks odds on that the Croatian will move on this summer, with Real Madrid now the most likely destination.
