Man City Line Up £20m Skrtel Bid

Premier League champions Manchester City are ready to move for Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel, with a £20m offer being lined up, according to reports today.

Football Talk will be keeping you up-to-date with all the latest transfer news throughout the summer. Today, Man City are linked with Martin Skrtel.

Martin Skrtel

Manchester City are ready to move for Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel, according to the Mirror.

The report claims that City boss Roberto Mancini is looking for a cheaper alternative to Thiago Silva after being quoted £35m for the Brazilian by AC Milan, and Skrtel has emerged as his number one target.

Premier League champions City are thought to be ready to submit a £20m offer for the 27-year-old as Mancini looks to strengthen his backline ahead of an assault on the champions league next season.

The Slovakian defender got married last week and has delayed any talk over his future until he returns from his honeymoon in 2 weeks time, but the Mirror claim that Skrtel has expressed his frustration at Liverpool’s eight-place finish and failure to qualify for the champions league last season.

The news will come as a blow to new Reds boss Brenden Rodgers, who will be desperate to keep hold of one of his key players. However, the former Swansea manager received some better news after Daniel Agger expressed his desire to extend his contract at Anfield, the Danish international is quoted in the Mirror as saying:

“It’s no secret that I’m happy to be in Liverpool. Otherwise, I would not have been there for six years,”

“I have not yet discussed a new contract but if they come with an offer I will surely sit down and talk with them. If they ask, I will listen.”

FT Verdict

There have been rumours of unrest in the Skrtel camp since the end of the season and if City come calling, it could prove difficult to keep hold of the player IF he does want a move.

In today’s market i think Liverpool could expect to receive more than £20m for Skrtel – who was superb last season. I think £25m might be more suitable for a player of his quality. Perhaps Rodgers could try and get Adam Johnson in any deal? However, i have a feeling that Skrtel will remain at Anfield for at least another year.

Do you think Skrtel will still be at Anfield next season? Get involved in the comments section.

He will leave for City, why wouldnt he? If the best team in UK comes calling you jump ship. Him and Kompany would be amazing.

Whilst were not a selling club, the guy is 27 and we have a couple of young hungry players waiting in the wings and I have a gut feeling that he may have peaked. We have coates about to break through and I think that he is more dominant in the air and better with the ball than skrtel.

if they are willing to pay £25 mil when we already have cover waiting for free with coates and wilson then I say cash in on him as he has only 3-4 years at the top left.

with 25 million thats another 1-2 quality players that we can buy to strengthen the rest of the squad.

Sounds like it could be a very good piece of business for Liverpool if this would be true and they could get between £20-25M for him after a price-war between ManC and Anzji, especially since he’s only done one really good season in the PL where Agger was undoubtedly the real star of the defense. Then get Höwedes from Schalke to take Skrtel’s place, as there have been some rumors about such a deal as well. He’s already a much better player than Skrtel and has the potential to become one of the best central defenders in the game. The question is if Höwedes want to give up CL football with Schalke, where he is also the captain, for the PL and Europa League with Liverpool… If there is a possibility for this to happen; DO IT, as fast as possible!!!!
