Chamakh - set for chop

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger will continue to reshape his squad this summer by selling up to eight players.

The Daily Mail claim that after completing the signings strikers Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud, Wenger will now turn his attention to cutting the ‘deadwood’ from his squad, with Andrey Arshavin, Denilson, Sebastiean Squillaci, Carlos Vela, Nicklas Bendtner, Marouane Chamakh, Park Chu-young and Johan Djourou all in the firing line.

According to the Mail, deals that would have seen Denilson  and Carlos Vela make their loan moves to Sao Paulo and Real Sociedad permanent have fallen through, while the potential transfer of Sebastien Squillaci to French side Bastia has also broken down.

Arsenal still hope they can resurrect those three deals while also trying to find buyers for five other squad players.

The difficulty is that many of the players are on inflated wages that other clubs are struggling, or are unwilling, to match leaving the Gunners having to compromise and lower the transfer fees.

FT Verdict

Selling the ‘deadwood’ will not only ease the clubs wage bill but also generate further transfer funds for Wenger to spend. A defensive midfielder and a defender who can cover at left back should still be on the priority list, while i also feel we need a proper play-maker.
