Man Utd and Chelsea look to have missed out on Tottenham midfielder Luka Modric after the player is reported to have agreed contract terms with Real Madrid, according to the Mirror.
The report claims that the Croatian is almost certain to leave White Hart Lane after making it clear to Spurs officials he wants to leave the club this summer.
Modric has been strongly linked with a move to Spanish champions Madrid in recent weeks and the Mirror now suggests that a transfer could be concluded in the next few days after the midfielder agreed terms on a four-year deal with Jose Mourinho’s side.
An apparent ‘source’ told the Mirror:
“Everything has been resolved satisfactorily.
“Luka and Madrid agree on everything. The only problem is the position of Tottenham, which has made things a little more difficult .
“But everything will be solved. And, more importantly, it will be resolved quickly.”
A ‘source’ told the Mirror
The only thing that remains is for Madrid and Spurs to agree upon a fee for the 26-year-old. Real are said to value Modric at around £28m, but Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is holding out for a fee nearer £35m.
Modric has previously been linked with both Manchester United and Chelsea (source: Daily Mail) but its understood Levy would prefer to sell abroad rather than strengthen a Premier League rival, and may be prepared to accept a slightly lower fee from Madrid.
New Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas hasn’t given up hope of persuading Modric in to staying in north London but if he does lose his man, he will at least have a sizeable war chest to strengthen his squad with this summer.
Football Talk Verdict
While the validity of this so-called ‘source’ is questionable at best and it also has to be asked whether Tottenham would let their player negotiate contracts terms before a fee has been agreed, the transfer of Modric to Madrid does look like a formality.
No doubt it would benefit Spurs more to see him go abroad and despite Levy being one of the best negotiators around, i can see him coming to a compromise with the Spaniards and Modric will get his move.
