Arsenal and Tottenham are set to battle it out for Italian goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano, according to the Daily Star.

Viviano is co-owned by both Inter Milan and Palermo but missed the majority of the 2011/12 season with a serious knee injury. Having made his debut for the national team in 2010, Viviano has gone on to make 6 appearances for the Azzurri but missed out on making the Italy Euro 2012 squad due to the knee complaint.

It’s believed that Palermo are willing to sell their share in the player while Inter are also open to cashing in having signed Samir Handanovic earlier this week.

The Star claim that both Arsenal and Tottenham are interested in bringing the 26-year-old to the Premier League this summer, having tracked the player for some time.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has lost Manuel Almunia already this summer, and the future of Lukas Fabianski is also up in the air, so the Frenchman is keen to find competition for first choice stopper Wojciech Szczesny.

New Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas has made a long-term successor to Brad Friedel his priority and is keeping tabs on Viviano, but the north London pair may face competition from Serie A side Fiorentina who are also said to be monitoring the players situation.

Football Talk Verdict

A goalkeeper is almost a certainty for both Arsenal and Tottenham this summer. Arsenal will look to sign a relatively cheap No.2 while Tottenham may be looking for a slightly more established name to take over as No.1 from Freidel.

Could Viviano be the man for either club? Quite possibly, but I’d say he may be more suitable for the Gunners than Spurs as he’s never really established himself as a first choice during his career. The only issue may be price and having to negotiate a tricky deal with both Inter Milan and Palermo.
