André Schürrle

Bayer Leverkusen have confirmed Chelsea have submitted a bid in excess of €20m (£16m) for attacker Andre Schürrle, according to the Guardian.

Schürrle enjoyed an excellent season with Leverkusen, scoring 7 goals in his 31 appearance, and that form earned him a place in the German squad for this summers European championships, where the 21-year-old impressed in a quarter finals win over Greece.

Regarded as one of the most promising talents in the Bundesliga, Schürrle has now attracted the interest of European champions Chelsea who have bid in excess of €20m (£16m) for the winger, according to Leverkusen chief executive Wolfgang Holzhauser.

However, the Germans have decided to hang on to the player, with Schürrle also said to favour staying at the club.

“We were presented with a very concrete offer from Chelsea for Andre of beyond the €20m mark. The sum was pushed back and forth between the two clubs. We ultimately chose Andre,”

“Andre is very valuable for us. He has also made it clear he would like to stay with us.”

Holzhauser was quoted as saying by the Guardian

The Blues are continuing to try and strengthen their attacking options ahead of the new season, despite the arrivals of Eden Hazard and Marko Marin, but it seems Roberto Di Matteo will have to fight to land the German winger this summer.
