Wenger Prepared To Sell RVP As Fresh Talks Due This Week
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is prepared to sell star striker Robin van Persie if he fails to persuade his captain to sign a new contract at the Emirates.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is prepared to sell Robin van Persie if he fails to persuade his captain to sign a new contract at the Emirates, according to the Daily Mail.
The report claims that Wenger has told club officials he wants the situation regarding Van Persie resolved quickly, even if it means he has to sell the 28-year-old this summer.
The Frenchman is still keen to keep hold of the striker and will hold face-to-face talks with his skipper this week in a bid to try and persuade him to sign a new contract with the club. However, if Van Persie refuses to do so, Wenger will sanction a quick sale rather than let the saga drag on.
The Mail believe Wenger would rather have the situation sorted quickly so he can have the funds, as well as the time, to reinvest in his squad and avoid a repeat of the scenario last summer, when he lost Cesc Fabregas, Gael Clichy and Samir Nasri towards the end of the transfer window.
This left Wenger with just over 2 weeks to spend the money raised and was later criticised for so-called ‘panic buying’.
The Gunners are expecting both Manchester City and Manchester United to make their interest official before the week is out, while they also expect Italian giants Juventus to come in with a second offer.
Should they sell this summer, the Mail believe the Londoners are looking for £30m for the 30-goal striker but at nearly 29-years-old, a poor injury record and the fact he has only 12 months remaining on his contract means they may only get around £20m.
Arsenal are already preparing for RVP’s exit and club scouts have already met to discuss potential replacements, with the likes of Fiorentina’s Stevan Jovetic and Borussia Dortmund’s Robert Lewandowski under consideration.
