Arsenal Confident RVP Will ‘Do A Rooney’ And Sign New Deal

Arsenal remain confident they can persuade Robin van Persie to sign a new long-term contract this summer as they feel his statement was a ploy to get more money

Arsenal remain confident they can persuade Robin van Persie to sign a new long-term contract with the club this summer, according to the Daily Mail.

The Gunners skipper released a controversial statement earlier this month where the striker questioned the clubs ambition before confirming his intention not to sign a new contract at the Emirates.

However, a ‘well placed club insider’ has told the Mail that Arsenal are still confident that the 28-year-old will sign a new deal, as they feel the statement was nothing more than a cunning ploy by his agent Kees Vos as part of on-going contract negotiations.

The saga is reminiscent of Wayne Rooney’s contract wrangle back in 2010, when the England striker announced his decision to leave Old Trafford after talks over a new deal broke down only to sign a new long-term contract days later after being offered more money by the club.

Arsenal have so far offered Van Persie a three year deal worth £130,000-per-week, plus a £5m loyalty bonus if he put pen-to-paper, but the player will be hopeful of getting an improved offer following his statement.

Van Persie is due to return to pre-season training with the Gunners next week and boss Arsene Wenger will hold face-to-face talks with his captain to try and persuade him to stay in north London.

If Arsenal are unable to tie RVP down, it’s believed that Wenger is willing to sanction a quick sale this summer so he has the time and the funds to reinvest in his squad.

Football Talk Verdict

This sounds like wishful thinking to me. As an Arsenal fan, i’d love this to be true but i just can’t see it. It’s a dangerous game to play and Van Persie has always maintained money isn’t his motive, it’s winning triphies that he wants.

Rooney’s situation was a lot different. He was at Manchester United, who regularly win silverware, so when Wayne announced his decision to leave due to the club not being able to match his ambitions, most would have been able to see straight through him and realise he was simply holding United to ransom and wanting more cash.

Arsenal haven’t won anything since 2005, so it’s far more believable that Van Persie would want to leave in order to win things. Sorry Gooners, as disappointing as it was to hear, i think Van Persie meant every word of his statement.
