Arsenal have made an official £6m bid for Caen youngster M’Baye Niang after learning of City’s interest in the player, according to the Mirror.

The report claims that Caen contacted the Gunners to let them know Man City were keen on flying the 17-year-old out to their training camp in Austria this week, prompting Arsenal to make an official move for the highly-rated striker.

Niang spent time on trial at Arsenal’s London Colney last week and Arsene Wenger has now offered the his club side Caen a deal worth £6m in a bid to stave off interest from the Premier League champions.

City approached Caen asking for permission to fly Niang out to Austria for a short trial with a view to sealing a permanent switch, but it’s unclear whether the player will go now that the Gunners have made their move.

It’s likely that City will also firm up their interest in the player in the coming days and will respond to Arsenal’s move with a bid of their own, leaving Niang in a position of having to choose between the two Premier League heavy-weights.
