Tottenham are trying to hijack Liverpool’s move for Swansea midfielder Joe Allen but a clause in his contract means the situation is complex, according to the Mirror.

Former Swansea boss Brendan Rodgers has been strongly linked with a move for Allen after taking up the reigns at Anfield. The Mirror suggest that the player has a clause in his contract that allows him to leave to one of the ‘big five’ clubs for £15m, but Rodgers is still hoping he can persuade the Swans to sell for less.

The Northern Irishman gave his word to Swansea that he wouldn’t try to sign any of his former players for at least a year, unless a player is subject to a bid from another side.

It’s understood Tottenham have launched a £10m move for Allen, meaning Liverpool are now free to make their move. However, the Reds may still be expected to match the £15m required in the aforementioned clause, which allows the Welshman to leave if Arsenal, Man Utd, Man City, Chelsea or Liverpool make a £15m bid.

But crucially, there is no mention of Spurs, so potentially Andre Villas-Boas may be able to land the 22-year-old for less than Liverpool if they can persuade Swansea to do business with them.

Rodgers is on a tight budget and the Mirror suggest he will try to push through the sale of Andy Carroll in the coming days in order to raise funds for his pursuit of Allen as well as tie up a deal for Fulham’s Clint Dempsey.
