Chelsea are set to table a late improved offer for Bayer Leverkusen forward Andre Shurrle, according to the Guardian.

The Blues have been strongly linked with the German international this summer and have already seen a £16m rejected by the Bundesliga outfit.

However, Roberto Di Matteo is desperate to add another striker to his squad before Friday’s 11pm transfer deadline and has once again turned his attention to Shurrle after being frustrated in his attempts to sign the likes of Hulk, Edinson Cavani and Radamel Falcao this summer.

Leverkusen are insistent that the 21-year-old forward is not for sale, but may find it hard to keep hold of him if an offer to good to refuse comes in from the European champions – who are expected to table another bid in the next 48 hours.

Should they successfully land Shurrle, it could take Chelsea’s spending towards the £100m mark. Roman Abramovich has loosened the purse-strings this summer and splashed £75m on Eden Hazard (£32m), Oscar (£20m), Marko Marin (£7m), Victor Moses (£9m) and Cesar Azpilicueta (£7m) and with a striker expected to come in this week, the spending is set to continue.
