Michael Essien

Arsenal have made a late move to try and take Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien on loan, according to the Daily Mail.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is desperate to add a defensive midfielder to his squad before the window slams shut at 11pm tonight after selling Alex Song to Barcelona.

The Frenchman has been linked with a whole host of names throughout Europe but it seems his search has lead him just across London, and he has now approached Chelsea about taking the Ghana international on a season-long loan.

Essien has fallen out-of-favour at Stamford Bridge after suffering a serious knee injury last season. He is now behind the likes of Mikel in the pecking order and boss Roberto Di Matteo is thought to be open to the idea of letting him go out on loan.

However, whether the Blues would be prepared to let him go to one of their league rivals remains to be seen. But Arsenal will feel confident they can persuade the European champions after taking Yossi Benayoun on loan on deadline day last summer.
