Rodgers Explains Michael Owen Snub
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers claims the club didn’t consider bringing Michael Owen back to Anfield as he wants to give the clubs youth a chance to shine
Despite the transfer window being closed, there is always transfer gossip doing the rounds in the papers and we’ll keep you up-to-date with the latest news during the coming months. Today, Rodgers claims Liverpool didn’t look at Michael Owen.
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers claims the club didn’t consider bringing Michael Owen back to Anfield this summer as he wanted to give the clubs youth a chance, according to Sky Sports News.
Liverpool failed to sign a replacement for Andy Carroll – who joined West Ham on loan – before the close of the summer transfer window. This lead to speculation that Owen could be set for a move back to Merseyside after his release from Manchester United at the end of last season.
However, the former Anfield favourite eventually joined Stoke City and Rodgers claims the 32-year-old was never under consideration. The Northern Irishman insists that once he missed out on his top transfer targets, it was time to give the clubs youth prospects a chance to shine.
“Liverpool didn’t consider Michael Owen,”
“If we didn’t get the targets that we hoped to get in the transfer window, I was going to go with what I had.
“There’s no point putting money into the academy and then not giving young players a chance. Look at the impact Raheem Sterling has made as a 17-year-old. All I’ve given him is an opportunity and he’s gone on and taken it.
“We’ve got a number of other young talents and hopefully over the coming months we can see them and see how they flourish.”
Rodgers is quoted as saying by Sky Sports
