Van Persie – Sold to Man Utd in the summer

Arsenal legend Tony Adams has slammed his former clubs transfer policy insisting the Gunners wont end their trophy drought until they stop selling their best players.

Arsene Wenger has seen several players leave the Emirates in recent summers with the likes of Cesc Fabregas, Gael Clichy, Alex Song, Samir Nasri and Robin van Persie all being sold in recent years.

This loss of key men has coincided with Arsenal’s seven year trophy drought and former captain Adams doesn’t believe it’s a coincidence that the club have struggled to win silverware whilst selling their best players.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Adams said:

“This game is all about players, if you keep selling your best ones then you’re not going to win anything. Most of the teams that win things at the end of the season will have the best players, that sums it up.”

Adams, who won four league titles at Arsenal including two doubles under Arsene Wenger, claims he can’t understand how Robin van Persie was allowed to run his contract down to it’s final year and insists such a thing wouldn’t have happened in his time at the club.

The 46-year-old also believes the Gunners made a huge mistake selling the Dutchman to rivals Manchester United in the summer and feels they should have tied him down to a new contract sooner. He continued:

“I never got into the last year of my contract when I was at the club. David Dein, and the people who were running the club, always made sure I had two or three years to run [on my deal].

“They shouldn’t have sold Robin van Persie because you need to keep hold of your best players. They made a mistake there, they should have wrapped Robin’s contract up earlier.

“It’s not about finance, they are going to miss Robin’s goals. If you then drop out of the top four then the money [they would have spent on van Persie] would have paid for itself.

“I can see the fans are frustrated, however I do agree with Arsenal’s principles. No one player is bigger than the club.

Adams also fears that Jack Wilshere could be the next player out the door:

“They need a structure and a formation but they need to do a little bit of work towards it. If Jack Wilshere plays well are they going to lose him? Arsenal need to start winning things.”

Mr. Arsenal is just voicing the same concerns many Gooners have. It seems that contract dealings have been a complete shambles ever since David Dein was forced to leave the club and fans have become tired at seeing key players leave each summer.

If Wilshere was the next to be sold, i think that may be the final straw for many Arsenal fans. There would be huge pressure on the board and manager if the ‘boy wonder’ is allowed to leave. Thankfully, he’s still tied down to a long-term deal and I don’t see him pushing for a move any time soon.
