Chelsea have suffered a transfer blow with the news that midfield target Paulinho is set to stay at Corinthians after signing a new contract with the Brazilian outfit, according to the Daily Mail.

The European champions have been strongly linked with a move for the 24-year-old defensive midfielder in recent transfer windows with boss Roberto Di Matteo keen to sign the talented South American as competition for Ramires and John Obi Mikel.

The Blues were believed to be considering a January move for the £9m-rated Brazilian international but they have now been told by Corinthians to forget making any attempt to sign Paulinho, after the player signed a contract extension with the club.

President Mario Gobbi Filho confirmed the news and insists they have no intention of selling their star man:

‘We have renewed his contract and we have adjusted it,’

‘Now it is at a level appropriate for Paulinho and the market. We have no intention to sell him, it is out of the question.

‘We have a cycle that lasts until July and we renewed his contract to keep him, not to sell him. We do not want to transfer any player in January.’

Filho is quoted as saying in the Daily Mail
