Manchester United have suffered a blow with the news that captain Nemanja Vidic will remain on the sidelines for a further 7-8 weeks.

The commanding Serbia centre-back missed a large portion of last season after suffering a cruciate knee ligament injury during United’s Champions League encounter with Basel in December 2011.

Vidic since recovered from the nasty injury but suffered another knee problem that required surgery in late September, and boss Sir Alex Ferguson has now confirmed the defender is no nearer to returning to action.

Fergie claims the 31-year-old will be out for another 7-8 weeks and doesn’t expect him back until around the festive period. The United supremo told MUTV:

“I think we’re talking around December for Vidic,” the boss told MUTV.

“Maybe around Christmas time.”

With Vidic set for another long spell on the sidelines, the onus will once again fall on Rio Ferdinand to marshall the back-line with Jonny Evans currently his preferred partner.

Although the returning Chris Smalling and Phil Jones will hope to push the Northern Irishman for a first team spot soon.
