Chelsea have confirmed that captain John Terry has been ruled out for ‘weeks rather than months’ after suffering a knee injury during the Blues 1-1 draw with Liverpool on Sunday.

After giving the European champions an early lead with a powerful header, Terry was forced off midway through the first half after Reds striker Luis Suarez fell awkwardly onto his right leg.

Initial fears were the 31-year-old could be set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines, however Chelsea announced on their official Twitter account that MRI scans showed no significant damage to his cruciate ligament and the defender will face weeks on the sidelines rather than months.

More details are expected to be announced shortly on the exact time terry will be out of action but given that some papers were claiming he could miss the rest of the season, ‘weeks’ has to be regarded as a positive for Blues fans.

UPDATE

Chelsea have made the following announcement on Chelseafc.com:

Today’s MRI scans on John Terry‘s right knee thankfully show no significant damage to the cruciate ligaments.

Chelsea Football Club’s medical team will conduct further tests over the next two or three days once the swelling has subsided to determine how long John will be out, but it will be a matter of weeks not months.
