Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is finally ready to give up on £50m flop Fernando Torres and make funds available for the purchase of Radamel Falcao, according to the Daily Mail.

Boss Roberto Di Matteo has been keen to add a new striker to his squad since Didier Drogba left in the summer but Abramovich was adamant Torres was given the chance to prove he was worth the huge sum he spent on him almost two years ago.

However, the Spaniard has continued to struggle for form this season and the Blues owner is now finally prepared to admit defeat and make funds available to sign a new forward with Falcao his number 1 target when the window re-opens.

The 26-year-old is also being tracked by Manchester City and Real Madrid, but has recently reaffirmed his desire to play in the Premier League and hinted at a move to Chelsea:

‘Chelsea are champions of Europe and there is not much more to say than that. Even after winning the Champions League they still go and sign players of the highest quality. Their ambition is clear.

‘I would not be worried about the physical aspect of the Premier League. I have scored goals in Argentina, Portugal and now Spain. I am confident I can adapt my game to any league. I would welcome the challenge of the Premier League.

I was also a big fan of Gianfranco Zola when I was growing up. I have watched the Premier League for a long time. There is so much quality and it is such an exciting league. Of course it is nice to think I might play in it.’

Falcao is quoted as saying by the Daily Mail

With Ateltico Madrid having financial difficulties they will almost certainly be forced to sell the Colombian hitman to the highest bidder, although the striker has a £48m buy-out clause in his contract and the Spanish outfit may hold out for that figure.

Falcao is believed to be keen on seeing out the remainder of the season with Atletico to ensure they secure Champions League football for next season, and Chelsea are prepared to wait to get their man.

But whether Chelsea manage to get him in January or next summer, his arrival could spell the end of Fernando Torres’ time at Stamford Bridge. Speculation has suggested that Torres may return to his former side Atletico as part of a player-plus-cash deal involving Falcao.
