Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo is fighting to save his job just months after leading the Blues to their first ever Champions League trophy, according to the Daily Mail.

After making a superb start to the season that saw Chelsea run-away leaders in the league at one point, the West Londoner’s have faltered dramatically in recent weeks and owner Roman Abramovich is said to be losing patience fast.

Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to West Brom left Chelsea in third place in the league and four points off the pace in the title race. The Blues have won just three of their last seven games and face a crunch match against Juventus in Turin on Tuesday where defeat would put their hopes of qualification in serious doubt.

Following the Juve game, Chelsea then welcome Premier League champions Manchester City to Stamford Bridge on Sunday, so this will prove to be a defining week not only for the club but also for Di Matteo’s future.

Abramovich is well aware that Pep Guardiola wants the Chelsea job when he returns to management next summer and the Russian doesn’t need much of an excuse to sack Di Matteo to make room for the former Barcelona coach.

Saturday’s defeat at the Hawthorns lead to a furious dressing room bust-up involving players and staff. Goalkeeper Petr Cech is understood to have been left angered by Chelsea’s poor defensive display while Di Matteo is also said to have been at the centre of things.

Raised voices could be heard as players and staff tore into each other, one man shouting the performance was ‘rubbish – and you all know it‘ while another said ‘Call yourself Champions League winners?‘.

Chelsea defender David Luiz confirmed after the game that the players were all upset following the defeat:

‘We were upset, it is normal. We are disappointed as we should have won this game.’

Luiz is quoted as saying in the Daily Mail

The Brazilian was then quizzed about the dressing argument, something he feels in normal at a big club like Chelsea. He continued:

‘Of course it’s normal. This is a big club and you cannot lose games.’
