[Player Ratings] Everton 1-1 Arsenal: Gunners Lack Spark Once Again

Arsenal and Everton played-out an entertaining 1-1 draw at Goodison Park on Wednesday night. Here are player ratings for Arsene Wenger’s men from the game.

Wojciech Szczesny

Arsenal and Everton played-out a 1-1 draw at Goodison Park on Wednesday night to leave us sitting seventh in the league and five points off fourth-placed West Brom.

The performance was better than at Villa Park on Saturday and a draw away to Everton should never be considered a bad result. It’s an extremely tough ground to visit and many tops sides have come away with nothing from there in recent times, so we shouldn’t be too despondent.

However, after the deflating display at the weekend, three points were vital from this game and a draw has left many Gooners feeling disappointed once again. The lack of cutting edge in the final third is the cusp of fans frustrations. The lack of service for Giroud was also worrying and the midfield still looks disjointed.

The good news is we looked pretty solid at the back, apart form one or two hairy moments. Here are my ratings from the game.

Arsenal Ratings

Szczesny – 8 – Could maybe have done better for Fellaini’s goal, as he was beaten from distance pretty easily, but he more than made up with it with some fine stops. The pick was probably a save to deny Distin’s header in the second period. Commanded his area well and came off his line at the right times.

Sagna – 5 – Struggled to contain Baines and Pienaar. Everything from the home side came down Sagna’s side. At fault for the goal as his poor header went straight to Fellaini and the Belgian made no mistake from the edge of the box. Plus his crossing was poor all night.

Vermaelen – 7 – Moved inside to the middle when Koscielny went off and formed a good partnership with Per. Very solid.

Koscielny – N/A – Off inside three minutes with injury.

Mertesacker – 6 – Struggled at times to contain the awkward and impressive Fellaini, but not many centre backs get the better of the big Belgian. Also got done by Jelovic too easily in the first half and the striker should have made it 2-1 but blazed over.

Arteta – 6 – Lucky not to give away a penalty and wasn’t at his best on his return to Goodison. Gave away some cheap free-kicks. Questionable form continues.

Wilshere – 7.5 – Very good display from Jack. The only midfielder to really push forward and try to make things happen, and we saw some of his trademark dribbles and turns. Superb tackle to deny Fellaini in 22nd min.

Cazorla – 6 – Needs a rest. Simple as that. Struggled to get in the game but came alive in the last half hour and had a couple of speculative shots. Was visibly frustrated before being subbed.

Ramsey – 5.5 –  Lost possession in the build-up to their goal and had another poor game. Many fans will pick the Welshman out for some criticism and while some is justified, he certainly wasn’t the sole reason we failed to collect all three points. Doesn’t help him being played on the wings.

Walcott – 7 – Showed his importance to the team with another lovely goal, but struggled to get into the game for large periods. Provided the only decent cross of the night for Giroud and the big man almost scored. Was carrying an injury in the second half and was moved to the left with little effect, but still a major threat in the side.

Giroud – 5.5 – Hard to rate him due to lack of service but when he did see the ball, he struggled to keep hold of it. Went close with a looping header and should have found the unmarked Gervinho with a late cross but sent it over his head. Still worked hard though.

Gibbs – 6.5 – On early for Koscielny and did well. Superb tackle to deny Naismith a clear opportunity early in second half and got forward on occasion too. Surprised he was left out the starting eleven.

Gervinho – 5 – Saw little of the ball but had a great chance on the break near the end, but unsurprisingly he wasted it.

Coquelin – N/A – Oddly brought on with 5 minutes to go. Seems Arsene was happy with the draw.

Swansea at the Emirates up next and three points are a must if we’re to maintain hopes of a top-four finish.

It has become too frustrating to watch this arsenal team. I am starting to wonder what they do in training it is the same amateurish school yard mistakes over and over. These players need a serious wake up call and who ever is not up for it please leave asap. The way this team is consistantly playing bad is unbelieveable. Between them the management and coaching staff they seem lost with no back up plan.I only have one heart and arsenal break it over and over time after time. I have to take a few games break from watching until this frustration eases.I am at the point where my frustration is lasting way too long after the game has finished which is not good.I will always be arsenal 4 life and wish them the best but just need a little break

The main problem is Arsenal does not have players who can anticipate and good assist like the days when RVP and Song were at Arsenal. Giroud could only chase for the ball.

What game did you watch? Ramsey along with wilshere were about the only ones pushing the pace. Well deserved with an assist as well as he played a good run out.

Totally wrong rating for Ramsey. One significant loss of possession to boot.
Hack on Arteta worthy of red but it was a hospital pass. Once more we were architects of our own downfall. When will someone learn to play the ball out up the line.
Need to freshen the midfield but never field the backup players. Why? We don’t have them!
Walcott interview clearly point to his leaving in fact almost an ad or a come and get me. Sagna too preparing for an exit. Best go but quickly so we can use the cash.

You clearly didn’t see the match gooner Mac or you watched it in the mirror because you got it all ass-backwards. Everton are a very tough squad at home and are in top form this season so a point is a good result….now a run of home games should help us recuperate some points as the Chavs seem to be stumbling…but of course no mention of them right!

Ramsey starts, Arsenal struggle, irrespective of how well he plays – thats for sure. He’s so greedy and selfish of the ball, the other midfielders wouldnt have a good game. Wake up Arsenal. He’s a bad omen!

Ramsay has not been the same player after his injury… he was a ball winner in midfield… he dint dwell on the ball for too long.. and was a confident man… he always wanted the ball and played quick one 2’s, but since that injury he just panics and rarely plays a good through ball… he will never be the player he was meant to be…. its time we brought a good midfield.. a box to box mid, a def mid and a cam. in our 3 man mid field…
    M’villa: def mid
    Jack: box to box mid
    Belhanda: Cam
we should play santi on the left/right wing.. walcott on the left/ right wing and Giroud through the center.
we have a good team and if they all work hard… we can compete but winning the league is out of the question.
Honestly… Arteta, Santi and Giroud are being over used and you can see thats effecting their form of late… we need good players in the window.

wenger simply doesn’t giv up on finished players like ramsey nd chamakh, but if he really luvs them, he needs 2 b strict on givin them instructns, ramsey solely built up fellaini’s goal, cos he puts the team on pressure, gervinho has never bin a typical wenger signin, cazorla needs 2 learn how 2 pass quickly on counter like fabregas nd wilshere does, wenger has 2 work on bringin in subs xactly wen needed not waitin till 70mins , the team was so much on pressure throughout. Our dear wenger is old

Arsene wenger has nothing to say, last week he rest so many important player in the bench for this match and the match ended with another draw, now we see how the decision he made cost the team. If jack wilshere, bacary sagna, and thomas vermaelin could play against aston villa we could eart all three points which help us to reach in top five. Wenger you puts us in trouble every year for you decision.

Gooner Mac, unbelievable poor reporting, for a start Ramsey wasn’t the cause of the goal as the ball was gathered by the keeper at the end of the move, danger over. The ball was then given to Sagna who played a poor pass infield which led to a bit of a scramble which led to Sagna “KICKING” not heading the ball to Fellani. What utter rubbish

Arsene Wenger has turned Arsenal as a team to an AVERAGE TEAM. Any match that Ramsey starts, Arsenal ends up struggling. He’s a bad omen. Gervinho has not improved since he arrived and his moves are very predictable. I have decided to be unemotional during Arsenal games to avoid Heart Attack. Wenger n the board are killing this club slowly and gradually.
