Grant Set For Blues Return As Abramovich Fears He’s Made A Mistake
Blues owner Roman Abramovich is ready to make an SOS call to Avram Grant in a bid to try and save Chelsea’s season, with the former boss eyed for an adviser role
Roman Abramovich is ready to make an SOS call to former boss Avram Grant in a bid to try and save Chelsea’s flagging season, according to the Daily Mail.
The Russian fears he may have made a mistake in appointing Rafa Benitez and wants to appoint Grant as an adviser for the Spaniard.
Benitez has been in charge for just three games but is still searching for his first win and has faced a barrage of abuse from the Stamford Bridge faithful. The former Liverpool boss opened with successive 0-0 home draws with Man City and Fulham, with Abramovich understood to have been left fuming by his teams performances during the two matches.
However, Saturday’s 3-1 defeat to London rivals West Ham appears to have been the final straw for Abramovich as he held crisis talks with senior Chelsea officials about the idea of approaching Grant to return to the club.
The Israeli was sacked as Chelsea boss after losing the Champions League final in 2008 but is understood to have a good relationship with Benitez, and Abramovich is hopeful the pair can work together to save the Blues season.
The Chelsea owner has already met with fans and visited the clubs training ground as he conducts his own inquest into the teams problems, and is fearful the appointment of Benitez is turning into a disaster.
The Mail claim the Chelsea players have not reacted well to Rafa’s appointment and are having communication issues with the new boss. Benitez insists on holding two team-talks, one in English and one in Spanish, which is said to have caused confusion in the dressing room against West Ham at the weekend.
Abramovich has not ruled out sacking Benitez if the poor form continues and with Grant installed in a consultancy role, he will be able to step in should the Spaniard suffer the same fate as Roberto Di Matteo.
