Trio Close To Signing New Contracts With Arsenal

Jack Wilshere, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Aaron Ramsey are all close to signing new long-term contract at Arsenal as the club tries to secure their futures.

Jack Wilshere, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Aaron Ramsey are all close to signing new long-term contracts at Arsenal, according to ESPN.

The report claims that Wilshere – who still has two-and-a-half years left on his current deal – will sign a new long-term deal that will see his salary move closer to top-earner Lukas Podolski, who’s said to be on £90,000-a-week, while Chamberlain and Ramsey will also commit their long-term futures to the club.

We’ve been forced to sell several key players in recent seasons due to contract issues, most notably Robin van Persie last summer, so it’s good to see the club actively trying to avoid a repeat with the likes of Wilshere and to a certain extent Chamberlain.

But I must say it’s a surprise that Arsene Wenger feels Aaron Ramsey deserves a new deal. While I’ve got a certain amount of sympathy for the lad after his leg break and the fact he’s being played out of position on the wing this season, he’s done nothing to suggest he deserves a new contract.

For me this is another example of the club rewarding mediocrity. Why not make the player earn his contract first? Instead of spending time securing the future of Ramsey, shouldn’t we be putting more time into trying to tie-down Theo Walcott and Bacary Sagna?

Walcott is out of contract at the end of the season and Sagna has only 18 months to run on his deal, and while ESPN suggest that the club hasn’t given up hope of Theo signing a new deal and are confident Sagna will agree an extension, I feel the future of those two should be far more of a priority than the likes of Ramsey.
