Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City are all eyeing a move for Real Madrid flop Luka Modric, according to the Daily Mail.

The report claims the Premier League trio are monitoring the 27-year-old’s situation, with Modric said to be considering a move back to England after a disastrous start to life at Madrid.

The Croatian midfielder made a big-money move to the Bernabeu from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer but has struggled to settle in La Liga. Modric has made just eight starts under Jose Mourinho, scoring just one goal, and was recently voted the worst signing of the season by readers of Spanish newspaper Marca – getting 32.2% of the votes.

The player himself recently admitted he knows the pressure he’s under after making a big-money move to Madrid:

‘This is Real Madrid, I know the huge media pressure on transfers.

‘I’m not looking for an alibi, I’m not that guy, but it’s very demanding to adjust to a huge club like Real Madrid.

‘I have had a number of solid performances, I failed in some but overall I proved I can offer something.’ Modric is quoted as saying by the Daily Mail

The Mail suggest Chelsea, United and City may be ready to offer Modric a way out if he does decide to cut short his stay in Spain, but any potential move would be in the summer and not this month.

I must admit, I’m not surprised by Modric struggling at Madrid. He’s trying to force his way into arguably the second most talented midfield in Europe with the likes of Xabi Alonso, Mesut Ozil, Sami Khedira, Angel Di Maria, Kaka, Michael Essien, Jose Callejon and of course Ronaldo all vying for starting places.

No doubt he’s a huge talent and can mix it with the best, but it takes time to get used to a new team and new league, and players are rarely given the luxury of time at Real Madrid.

If Modric does decide to make the move back to the Premier League it would be interesting to see where he goes. Chelsea, United and City are probably the only clubs that could afford him but what are the odds of a dramatic return to Tottenham? Daniel Levy would have to use all his negotiating skills to pull that one off!
