Tottenham Hotspur have told Spanish giants Real Madrid they will need to break the British transfer record with a £55 million offer to land winger Gareth Bale, according to the Daily Mail.

The report claims Madrid boss Jose Mourinho is a huge admirer of the Welsh international’s and is weighing up a £35m move to try and lure him to the Bernabeu, which if successful, would equal the current British transfer record after Liverpool paid Newcastle £35m for striker Andy Carroll back in January 2011.

However, the Mail understand that Spurs have told the La Liga champions they would need to break the British record with a £55 million offer to have any chance of signing the 23-year-old.

The newspaper claims chairman Daniel Levy is resigned to losing his star asset in the summer and report that Madrid are in the driving seat to sign their No.1 target due to the partnership agreement the two clubs signed when Real bought Luka Modric last summer.

There is no doubt Spurs are going to have a fight on their hands to keep hold of Bale over the next few years. He’s a huge talent and one of the best wingers in Europe who is only going to get better, so it’s no surprise the likes of Real Madrid are being linked.

It’s not often a club has an asset like Bale so if you’re forced to sell, you need to ensure you get the best price possible, and I’m sure a shrewd negotiator like Levy will do just that. But will Madrid be willing to pay the reported £55m Spurs are said to be demanding? I’m not convinced they will so it may be down to the player to force a move if he really wants out of White Hart Lane, which i can’t see happening any time soon.
