Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has revealed that he will concentrate on bringing in new players once the future of Theo Walcott has been resolved, according to Arsenal.com.

Despite being linked with a whole host of names, we’re yet to add to the squad in the January transfer window and many Gooners have been left frustrated by the club’s lack of activity in the market.

It appears the reason for this is that the boss is concentrating his efforts on securing the future of Theo Walcott before trying to bring in new faces, but Arsene claims he’s working ‘very hard’ and knows exactly what positions he’s going to strengthen. Wenger told the club’s official website:

“We are working very hard,”

“First of all we want to sort out the injuries we have, and we are trying very hard to close the deal with Walcott. Once we have done that, we will certainly do something else. At the moment I cannot tell you more.

“It has become more difficult [to buy players in January] for one simple reason: we have a good squad. I know we swim against the stream a bit because people don’t believe that. I say we have a very good squad.

“But we have some improvements to make and we know exactly where. In January it is difficult to find the players that are really better and can give something special to the squad. The number is right, we have a good balance and we are working very hard to find what we want.”

Theo’s contract is rightly seen as a priority, but firstly that should have been resolved before the New Year and secondly, why can’t we do both? Why can’t the club be sorting Theo’s contract out AND trying to bring in new players at the same time? I understand Theo’s future is linked with us potentially signing a new winger or striker, but what’s his future got to do with us signing the defensive midfielder we desperately need?

So it looks like we’re going to be waiting till the final few days of the month before doing our business, which seems entirely counter-productive to me. This is one of the busiest months of the season so wouldn’t it be prudent to have any new signings on board as soon as possible so they can contribute?

Anyway, the good news is that the boss says he’s going to buy so let’s hope Theo signs his contract soon so Wenger can get on with strengthening the squad. Better late than never I suppose!
