Wenger: I’ll Buy New Players Once Walcott’s Future Is Resolved

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed that he will concentrate on bringing in new players only once the future of attacker Theo Walcott has been resolved.

With the January transfer window now open for business we’ll be keeping you up-to-date with all the latest transfer gossip. Today, Arsene Wenger gives the latest on his January plans.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has revealed that he will concentrate on bringing in new players once the future of Theo Walcott has been resolved, according to

Despite being linked with a whole host of names, we’re yet to add to the squad in the January transfer window and many Gooners have been left frustrated by the club’s lack of activity in the market.

It appears the reason for this is that the boss is concentrating his efforts on securing the future of Theo Walcott before trying to bring in new faces, but Arsene claims he’s working ‘very hard’ and knows exactly what positions he’s going to strengthen. Wenger told the club’s official website:

“We are working very hard,”

“First of all we want to sort out the injuries we have, and we are trying very hard to close the deal with Walcott. Once we have done that, we will certainly do something else. At the moment I cannot tell you more.

“It has become more difficult [to buy players in January] for one simple reason: we have a good squad. I know we swim against the stream a bit because people don’t believe that. I say we have a very good squad.

“But we have some improvements to make and we know exactly where. In January it is difficult to find the players that are really better and can give something special to the squad. The number is right, we have a good balance and we are working very hard to find what we want.”

Theo’s contract is rightly seen as a priority, but firstly that should have been resolved before the New Year and secondly, why can’t we do both? Why can’t the club be sorting Theo’s contract out AND trying to bring in new players at the same time? I understand Theo’s future is linked with us potentially signing a new winger or striker, but what’s his future got to do with us signing the defensive midfielder we desperately need?

So it looks like we’re going to be waiting till the final few days of the month before doing our business, which seems entirely counter-productive to me. This is one of the busiest months of the season so wouldn’t it be prudent to have any new signings on board as soon as possible so they can contribute?

Anyway, the good news is that the boss says he’s going to buy so let’s hope Theo signs his contract soon so Wenger can get on with strengthening the squad. Better late than never I suppose!

this is abolute rubbbish. if walcot doesnt sign b4 the window closes, what happens? its just an inexcusable excuse not to sign long does it take to sign a player? chelsea didnt spend a week to sign demba ba.we have been linked to over 25 players, yet nothing has happened. it shows our unseriousness & lack of ambition. do we have capable bench in case of injuries to first team players?if mertesacker was either suspended on injured on saturday, who would have come in for koscincy?

Correct. Plus what does a winger /striker have to do with our obvious need for a defensive, ball winning midfielder ? and a left back who can defend ? (which Santos cannot)and a keeper in place of Manone and Fabianski who are not good enough ???

      I agree.
      The squad is good ?
A team is only as good as what they do on the pitch and 21 point behind the leaders, and crashing out of the league Cup to Division 2 opposition is NOT good. Gervinho, Ramsey and Coquelin were completely outplayed in that match against a team about 70 positions below us which suggest lack of quality squad depth and a need to reinforce

I`m agree with ade. Wenger use the Walcot contract to not sign new players in January. This contract will be signed in the end of the month, and then there is no time for new players aftet this. You don`t need to be a rocket scientist to understand the drawing here. Dam this fool and the board. They have no ambition left for the club on the pitch. Greedy bastards!

This is a joke surely . We won’t be buying anyone is Jan. Then Arsene will say “we’ve spent millions in Jan on Theo, wilshere & co and with Diaby fit again we don’t need anyone. We have a good squad ” …. Anyone heard this b4. Wtf is going on, QPR sign M’Vila ? This is the player we supposedly tried to sign last year for £25, the player that can save arsenal & their dermis probe……… I give up, I won’t be renewing my season ticket till Kronke, Gazidis, & Wenger have gone.

    Up the Arsenal

guyz this matter is very simple, i av been saying it since last 7 years that the problem of arsenal fc is their fans over there, let them boycott like 4 -5 matches & we shall see how the board will scatherd.

I think wenger has lost it. He can’t get the right players because he lacks the technical knowhow in modern day football . Everybody knows that defensively we are very very poor yet he has refused to see that as a problem. When u concede cheap goals and u can’t Score. What happens! My old father is faster than some of our defenders.

Wenger and the Board are the biggest selfish fraudsters in England. This is smply a prelude to not signing any player this January despite the obvious needs we have. Its because fans have kept buying the expensive tickets that these greedy people keep doing this. Wenger and the Board no loner care about the fans. I pray we don’t get champins league football so they can understand

I think d Uk based fans are always happy with all Arsene is doing otherwise they are in d best position to help us out cos Arsenal partly financially depend on them. I submit.

Meaning dat, if theo ddn’t sign we’ll not buy? I’m regreting being an arsenal fan @ this time. It sucks to see other clubs buy while we keep on relying on wenger’s ”very good squard”

As for me I don’t think I have any foolish money to spend watching a club I know it never win anything. Asene is in sane, he does not care our feelings, so worrying ourself on the team, the boar and coach are all stupid, let them have thief club alone, let’s all stop watching or our match, bot on the cable and even at the emirate. By the we all turn our back on them we will all see where the generate the money they embezzling. We must all wake up and fight for wright otherwise this how they will treating us like animals.

Come on guys, the squad is good. But that’s all it is and what’s wenger aiming for I think. I guess he doesn’t want a ‘world class’ squad. No sense of competitiveness in the club from the games I watched, either too tired or too mediocre?? The defense mainly, big names with international caps but plays like rubbish. No matter how improved we are defensively, we really should be playing the arsenal way where we control the ball and never let the opposition take a hold of it. This squad just doesn’t have that ability to pass and control the ball neatly and quickly, it is just disappointing to watch
