Liverpool striker Luis Suarez has risked a backlash after admitting he dived to try and win a penalty against Stoke earlier in the season and also claims fierce rivals Manchester United control the media, according to the Daily Mail.

The Uruguayan hitman has light-up the Premier League with some stunning goals this season but he’s also developed a reputation as a diver due to his ‘theatrics’ on the pitch.

Suarez was criticised by Stoke City defenders and the media for a blatant dive during a 0-0 stalemate at Anfield earlier in the season and the striker has now admitted he ‘invented’ a foul in order to try and win a penalty to help Liverpool win the game. During an interview with Argentinean TV, Suarez said:

‘I don’t listen all the nonsense some people say about me. I’m accused of cheating here. People say I throw myself all the time inside the box.

‘Let’s see: they said that when we played against Stoke, for instance, and in that case they were right. I invented a foul because we were drawing against Stoke and I wanted to win.

‘Sometimes on the pitch I say to myself, “What have I done?” But the name of Suarez sells papers.

Suarez was also criticised for a recent handball during a 2-1 win over Mansfield in the FA Cup, but he insists it was accidental. He continued:

‘The other day, for instance, I touched the ball with my hand accidentally, and I was criticised because I kissed my hand.

‘The media make up a lot of things about me because they want to sell papers. I say to the media: you should talk more about football, not about other stuff.’

The 25-year-old hinted the reason he is targeted by the press is because rivals Manchester United ‘control’ the British media and they will always ‘help’ Sir Alex Ferguson’s men.

Suarez was also critical of the way South American players are treated in England and claims players such as him and Carlos Tevez aren’t treated in the same way English players are:

‘When someone comes and says to me something bad about being a South American, I don’t cry, because that happens inside the pitch.

‘I have my conscience clean. But as I have said: Manchester United controls the media, they are powerful and the media will always help them.

‘I can help Liverpool today. We are united and we can play well. Liverpool doesn’t depend on me.

‘It’s complicated to play here in England. As Carlitos (Carlos Tevez) and Kun (Sergio Aguero) has said, it’s complicated for a South American footballer to be here as we are treated differently to the local footballers.

‘But they have their culture, they are like this, you know. I have to play football, which is what I always wanted, but I have suffered a lot for being a footballer. Suarez is quoted as saying by the Mail

There is no doubt Suarez is a talented footballer but he really doesn’t help himself does he? Some may applaud him for coming clean and admitting he took a dive against Stoke, but it’s hardly going to do wonders for his reputation is it? How can he complain about being called a cheat when he’s now openly admitted he is?

A lot of this may come down to cultural differences and no doubt he’ll come out soon and say he was misinterpreted, but it doesn’t take a genius to work out your not going to do your club any favours by admitting you dive. If Suarez is fouled in the box this weekend, how many will have sympathy if he doesn’t win a penalty?
