Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed he’s working hard to try and bring in two new players before the transfer window closes at the end of the month, according to Arsenal.com.

I think all Arsenal fans will agree that the squad needs strengthening this month. We made our worst start to a Premier League season under Wenger which has left us sitting seven points off fourth-placed Tottenham and we were also dumped out the Capital One Cup by League 2 Bradford.

Our need for new blood was highlighted once again on Sunday when we were searching for an equaliser against Chelsea, and Arsene was forced to bring on Russian outcast Andrey Arshavin. That’s how bad it’s got in recent weeks.

But as we approach the final week of the January window, we are yet to see a new player brought to the club. At his press conference ahead of Wednesday nights game with West Ham, the boss was quizzed on his transfer plans and he confirmed he’s working hard to try and bring in two new players but stopped short of giving away any names. Wenger told the clubs official website:

“Yes [I still want two signings]. We work very hard on it,” Wenger said. “It is not the number that counts but the quality.

“I don’t give you any names. I don’t come out on rumours because it would put [teams] in a bad position. The player as well.

“You have to respect the player has a contract somewhere, is playing and as long as the transfer is not done for anybody it is best not to talk about it because it doesn’t work. He has to continue to play where he is.”

While it’s always good to hear the manager claim he’s ‘working hard’ to sign new players, unfortunately ‘working hard’ doesn’t always turn into completed deals with Arsene. We constantly hear how hard he’s apparently working on signing new players but it usually ends with the manager telling us he couldn’t find that ‘top, top, top quality player’ he was looking for.

Two players is a start but for me, I think three is the minimum we require. A versatile defender is surely a must after Djourou left? And we also need a defensive midfielder and a striker. I’d love to see Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, Etienne Capoue and David Villa come in. I think we’d have a great squad with those three, but sadly I don’t see that happening.

Let’s see what Wenger brings us but it looks like we’ll all be up late on January 31st glued to Twitter and Sky Sports News!
