The father of Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina has claimed his son would ‘love’ to join Spanish giants Barcelona and replace the out-going Victor Valdes, according to talkSPORT.

Speculation over the future of the Reds No.1 has intensified in recent weeks after Victor Valdes confirmed he wont be renewing his contract at the Nou Camp, with his current deal set to expire in 2014.

talkSPORT suggest Barca could cash in and sell Valdes in the summer rather than lose him on a free the following year with Liverpool’s Reina understood to be under consideration as a potential replacement.

Reina’s dad, Miguel, has claimed that while his son is happy at Anfield he would ‘love’ to move to the Catalans and return to the club where he started off as a child.

“Pepe is very happy at Liverpool, but would love to be there again, no doubt,”

“It’s just ‘wow’. It is his home, the club where he grew up and made it. I think he’d be more than happy.” Reina senior is quoted a saying by talkSPORT

He then went on to confirm that Barca were interested in the 30-year-old’s services and the long-serving Liverpool goalkeeper would be ‘crazy’ about the prospect of moving to the Nou Camp if the two clubs can reach an agreement. Miquel continued:

“Above all is that Barcelona wants Pepe’s services,”

“They have coaches who are the ones that decide whether or not the goalkeeper is most appropriate. Then there are the clubs, which are the ones that talk.

“And if there was agreement, Pepe would be crazy to come.”

I actually think Reina would be an upgrade on Valdes so it would be a great signing for Barcelona if they manage to pull it off. Reina has been a loyal servant to Liverpool for over seven years but he would no doubt find it difficult to turn down the opportunity to return ‘home’ to Catalonia.

Will Barcelona follow up their reported interest with a firm offer and will Liverpool even agree to sell? Only time will tell and it looks like we’ll have to wait until the summer to find out.
