[Player Ratings] Brighton 2-3 Arsenal: Giroud Excellent, Santos Not So Much

By on January 26, 2013

Olivier_Giroud Arsenal

What a proper cup tie. Brighton were excellent and played some wonderful stuff. Arsenal were, well, Arsenal. Good going forward at times but poor at the back. Arsene Wenger was forced to introduce the big-guns from the bench in the second half with the score at 2-2, and thankfully it paid off as Walcott grabbed a late winner.

Olivier Giroud was superb and fully deserved a hat trick, but he’ll settle for two. Both his goals were both wonderfully taken. Once he starts producing in the big games he’ll be a real player. However, until Arsene sorts out the defence, we’re not going to be challenging for any top honors any time soon. We look so fragile at the back and we still lack a real physical presence in midfield. Here are my ratings from the game:

Arsenal ratings

Szczesny – 6 – Stunning early save to keep the hosts at bay seconds before we scored the opener, but was at fault for the equaliser. Got right underneath the ball when he should have been attacking it.

Jenkinson – 6.5 – Skinned by Lua Lua a couple of times in the second half but was full of energy and always does his best.

Mertesacker – 5 – Let Barnes run off him at the corner for their first goal but probably expected Szczesny to collect. At fault for the second as well when he should have been goal side of Ulloa. It really was schoolboy defending.

Koscielny – 6 – Better than his defensive partner but didn’t look entirely comfortable next to the big German.

Santos – 1 – Predictably awful. Very lucky to get away with losing the ball right on the edge of our area. Brighton scored but it was given offside. Caught out both positionally and in possession on several occasions. Just stood and watched as Brighton crossed from his side for the second. So many issues we could go on all day. He really shouldn’t be anywhere near the first team. Arsene finally put him out his misery and subbed him for Gibbs.

Diaby – 6 – In and out the game really. Showed flashes of brilliance, like his lovely assist for Giroud’s second goal, but still looks a little short of his best.

Ramsey – 6 – Steady and unspectacular. He looks much more comfortable in the middle but i still don’t think he’s got the physical presence to be the midfield enforcer we need.

Rosicky – 6 – Selected for some rough treatment by the home side but showed some quality on the ball. Tired in the second half and was eventually subbed.

Chamberlain – 5 – Couple of decent crosses early on but over complicated things at times instead of giving the simple ball. Disappointing overall, didn’t take his chance to shine. Subbed

Podolski – 6.5 – Didn’t build on his excellent display against West Ham. Barely touched the ball in the opening 45 minutes. But was better in the second half and was unlucky not to find the net with a free kick when he crashed a lovely effort off the bar. Also went close late on to adding a fourth but saw his close-range shot well saved.

Giroud – 8.5 – Stunning opener. Opened his body up and bent it beautifully into the top corner. Second was also a lovely goal, taking Diaby’s ball down well and smashing home. Deserved his hat trick and if Theo had passed he would have had it, but it will come. Great performance from the big man.

Subs:

Wilshere – 6.5 – Gave away a few sloppy balls but also showed his quality and was involved in the build up that lead to the corner for the winner.

Walcott – 7.5 – Another well taken goal for Theo. Showed his ridiculous pace to beat two defenders to the ball down the right and was through on goal but should have passed to Giroud for a tap-in instead of shooting from a tight angle. Looking at the top of his game though. 17 goals at this stage in the season is an excellent return.

Gibbs – 7.5 – Showed poor Santos what real left back looks like. Made a real impact and his pace down the left was key to us winning the game. god help us if he gets injured.

I can’t believe santos, he is a disgrace he just doesn’t care! And why he wasn’t subbed at half time is beyond me, get rid or let him rot!

I did not watch the game but I saw a clip of Brighton second goal. I want to say that It is time for Santos to leave the club. He does not even try to improve himself . He will always be a major weaklink in our defence. Nothing must happen to Gibbs. God help us.

Am a bit happy with what happened today, most especially seeing giround’s balls at the back of the net,i guess arsene wenger will be hoping not to sign another striker because of what giroud did today.

Jekinson did well today. I think Arsene Wenger should be starting him ahead of Sagna in all our games. Nize game boys, especially Giroud and Walcolt. Excellent result. FORWARD EVER, BACKWARD NEVER. GUNNERZ!

Too harsh on Santos. It’s fashionable to bash Santos these days, but he was decent at times last year and could be a perfectly suitable backup. Just needs to find his form. I hope he gets some time with the youth/reserves to just that. He’s got a good attitude and is certainly not deserving of the abuse he’s received.

Were we watching the same game ? You can see that the opposition targeted him, just as they do every time he plays, and got a lot of success down his wing. He made crucial errors which would have cost goals if it wasn’t for the offside flag and made no attempt to block the cross that led to the second goal. He is a liability and Wayne Bridge would be better.

Santos has not played in the team for a long time usual thing by arsenal so called supporters ruin a player for fun

He has not played for a long time for the first team, so that gives him the right to forget how to defend? May i remind you that they do have coaching and training almost everyday and the first rule when an opposing player is on the wings is to close him down so that he can’t cross, simple logic for which you don’t need to be playing to understand, secondly, he went dribbling at the edge of the box, he did cost us a goal vs chelsea last time int he 5-3 win and if it wasn’t for RVP(traitor) we would have lost that game and he almost did cost us today.

His positioning is awful from the start, even the Brazilian coach has mentioned that before….

and the worst of it all, during the last few minutes of the first half, when one of Brightons player was injured and we had a corner while brighton were playing with 10 men, he decided to shoot from far out while most of our players were in the box!! such bad judgement, give me the money he is getting and i can also put in a shit performance like him all day long!!!

Wow, don’t recall Jenkinson or even too many of our players closing down anybody except for Rosicky. Lua Lua seemed to always have time on the ball to do what he wants. Santos was being targeted and if i recall did a fair amount of tackling winning the ball as well. yes he did lose the ball for the offside goal looking for anyone of our players to make themselves available but i recalled he dispossessing the player before that. Yeah look for a scape goat especially when a player is not being helped on the wing like all the time.

Santos was kaking mistakes after mistakes on both halves of the pitch in different directions. I actually thought he was playing for brighton and not arsenal. Too surprised he wasnt given a -5 for his performance today. 1 looks like an over-rating for him. Dont think defenders from the conference could perform worse than him on any given day. Heck Bould would have outperformed santos if he were to play today.

And Mr Wenger says we have qualty…Santos is Wengers idea of quality…We wont buy anyone in this transfer period. Wenger tends to put his faith in rubbish like this when he is not getting rid of this and buying better players. I agree with Amaka, Jenkins needs more game time and needs to be a regular starter than Sagna…maybe sagna and santos should get a room…lol.

Who is coming through the famous youth system at Left Back ? I can only assume that there is nobody. Jenksinson for Sagna is a change that I approve of and I think Sagna has decided to leave in the summer. I don’t think he cares any more.

1 for Santos; you must be joking. He does not deserve a single point. Even as som of youhad pointed out he just came back, but, he lack any desire to play. Sometimes he jogs with the ball, and then decides to make a short sideway pass. Shooting!!! even I as could d better. Worst Wenger signing.
