Great news Gooners! Arsenal are on the verge of completing the signing of Spanish international left-back Nacho Monreal from cash-strapped Malaga, according to various sources this evening.
The Daily Mail are one of several news outlets who are reporting that the 26-year-old defender has arrived in London this evening to complete the formalities of a deal thought to be worth around £8.5m.
Our need for defensive cover, particularly at left-back, was heightened when Kieran Gibbs picked up a thigh injury against Liverpool on Wednesday night and has subsequently been ruled out for around 3 weeks.
It seems this injury has prompted Arsene Wenger to make a late move for Monreal, who is a former Malaga team-mate of current Gunners midfielder Santi Cazorla. He’s got nine caps for Spain under his belt and has been in impressive form for the La Liga outfit this season, but unfortunately he’ll be cup-tied in Europe after representing Malaga in the champions league group stages.
As we reported earlier, Arsenal were also in talks to sign Athletic Bilbao defender Fernando Amorebieta, but the Mail claims the defender has opted against making the move this month and will remain with Bilbao until the summer.
I’ve seen Monreal play on a couple of occasions this season and I think he’ll be a great signing if we can get this one over the line before the window slams shut at 11pm tonight. He’s quick, good in the tackle and loves to get forward. And get this, he can actually cross! That’s going to be a nice change, isn’t it?!
