As Arsenal fans argue over whether Arsene Wenger is the right man to take the club forward it seems there is no such debate within the corridors of the Emirates Stadium with reports claiming that the Frenchman will be backed by owner Stan Kroenke at today’s board meeting and handed a £70m summer transfer budget.

Kroenke attended Tuesday night’s disappointing 3-1 Champions League loss to Bayern Munich at the Emirates and the club have confirmed to the Daily Mail that he will meet with Wenger at the clubs monthly board meeting after training today when the American is expected to give his full backing to the boss and summer transfer plans are expected to be on the agenda.

The Mail claim Wenger has been left shocked by the gulf in class on show against Bayern and will use a reported £70m transfer budget to overhaul his squad in the summer with Stefan Jovetic, Pepe Reina, Mario Gotze, Victor Wanyama and Etienne Capoue all understood to be on the bosses shopping list.

However, missing out on Champions League football could see the transfer budget cut with the newspaper suggesting Wenger is drawing up a list of alternatives with chief scout Steve Rowley in case we fail to finish in the top four this season.

I think there can be no doubt the squad needs some serious work in the summer and I would welcome the names listed above to the club with open arms, with the possible exception of Pepe Reina who I don’t see as a huge step-up from Szczesny.

However, where are the defenders on that list? None of the reported ‘targets’ are defenders. Yes we need a new goalkeeper, and another striker, we’ve needed a defensive midfielder all season, and I’d love to see Gotze come to Arsenal, but sorting out the defence needs to be priority No.1 this summer.

Our back-line has been an embarrassment at times this season and while the addition of a new keeper and defensive-minded midfielder may help things, a new centre-back must surely be on the agenda as well this summer?

The boss is facing a vital few months and failure to secure Champions League football next season would put unprecedented pressure on his shoulders. But if the board are going to back him regardless of our final league position and hand him a £70m transfer budget, Wenger better make sure he spends it wisely and fills the obvious holes in the squad with some top quality players, or I fear we’re in for more of the same next season.
