Borussia Dortmund have confirmed that Manchester United target Robert Lewandowski won’t be renewing his contract with the club and is set to leave either at the end of the season or on a free transfer next summer, according to Sky Sports News.

The 24-year-old Polish hitman has become one of the most highly-rated strikers in Europe after two excellent seasons with Dortmund that has seen him score 60 goals in 121 games and lead the club to two successive Bundesliga titles.

His form has not gone unnoticed with Sky Sports reporting that Manchester United, Bayern Munich and Juventus are all following the players progress closely and it seems they could be set to fight it out for his signature.

With his contract due to expire in 2014, Dortmund director Michael Zorc has told Sky that Lewandowski will not be renewing his deal and the club will decide at the end of the season whether to cash-in and sell or let him go on a free transfer 12 months later.

“Robert Lewandowski is not going to sign a new contract. We will have to see if he is going to be on the move in the summer,”

“His contract runs until 2014. There are two options. Either he goes in June or he stays for another year.” Borussia Dortmund director Michael Zorc told German Sky.

Lewandowski’s agent, Cezary Kucharski, recently hinted that the striker would be on the move soon, saying:

“He’s already in his third season at Dortmund. Read between the lines and you’ll know what this means,” Kucharski is quoted as saying by Sky Sports

Any move by United for Lewandowski must surely put the future of Javier Hernandez or Danny Welbeck in doubt. Sir Alex Ferguson already has four top-drawer strikers at his disposal and while Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney’s positions at Old Trafford should be secure, if Ferguson is looking to bring in another forward it may mean either Hernandez or Welbeck is shipped out to make room. My best guess is it would be Hernandez that makes way, but we’ll have to wait and see how things develop.
