Szczesny – not leaving Arsenal

Wojciech Szczesny has dismissed reports suggesting he could leave Arsenal this summer after insisting he wants to remain at the Emirates to repay the club for the faith they’ve shown in him, according to Sky Sports News.

The young Polish stopper has been Arsenal’s No.1 for the last two seasons but has seen his place come under threat after a string of unconvincing displays in recent weeks. The 22-year-old was dropped for last weeks trip to Bayern Munich as well as Saturday’s game with Fulham and Szczesny has had to sit on the sidelines and watch Lukasz Fabianski keep two clean sheets as we secured consecutive 2-0 away wins.

This lead to newspaper speculation claiming Szczesny may be forced to leave in the summer with Arsene Wenger said to be looking to bring in a new first choice goalkeeper at the end of the season. However, Szczesny has insisted he isn’t on the look-out for a move and claims he’ll stay at Arsenal as long as he’s wanted to repay the club:

“I am too happy to go somewhere else. I believe in the philosophy of the club and that Arsenal will start to win again.

“I have a debt to pay here for the club, I owe them. I just do not want to go anywhere else. As long as they want me here, there is no ‘somewhere else’, and I have a contract until June 2015.” Szczesny is quoted as saying by Sky Sports

It’s good to hear the young stopper isn’t going to look for a move at the first sign of trouble. He was thrust into the first team as a 20-year-old and while his form has dipped recently, he’s got a long career ahead of him and I fully believe he can still be Arsenal’s long-term No.1.

We’ve had a pretty terrible season so far and Szczesny feels it would be a disaster if we missed out on Champions League football next season and has called on the players to save the club from ‘humiliation’. He continued:

“It is halfway through March and we have lost everything. There are still 10 matches left to save the club against the humiliation of all times.

“It would be disaster not to be in the top four and without Champions League next year. We have the 10 most important games in our careers. We are going through the most difficult time since I came here.” Szczesny is quoted as saying by Sky Sports

I’m not sure I agree that it would be a ‘disaster’ for us to miss out on the top-four for a season, in fact it could be the wake-up call the players, manager and board need, but I still think we’ll do it as long as we maintain our improved form at the back over the coming weeks.
