Premier League action returns this weekend following the two week international break and Chelsea play relegation-threatened Southampton at St Mary’s on Saturday afternoon.

Boss Rafa Benitez has been giving his press conference on Thursday ahead of the game and gave Chelseafc.com a team news and injury update with the latest on Gary Cahill, Ramires and captain John Terry.

Defender Cahill was forced to miss England’s World Cup Qualifying double-header through injury while midfielder Ramires also picked up a minor problem during the international break with Brazil and Benitez confirmed the duo are working hard with the Chelsea physios in order to try and prove their fitness ahead of the trip to the south coast, but it’s going to be touch-and-go whether they make it.

Benitez also expressed his delight at the progress of captain Terry who’s continuing to work his way back to full fitness following a lengthy lay-off with a knee injury.  Here’s the update that Benitez gave the clubs official website:

‘The players that were playing with their national teams are fine, [Gary] Cahill and Rami [Ramires] are working with the physios, but the rest of the squad are okay,’

‘We still have a couple of days, we will see, they had a special training session with the physios today, they could be available but it will be close.’

‘He’s [Terry] been training with us and doing well so I’m very pleased with his evolution,’

‘He’s training every day and improving his fitness. It’s just a question of how many games you can play, not just for John, but for everyone.

‘We will play four games in nine days, none of the players can play in all of those games and be 100 per cent fit’

Chelsea face a packed fixture schedule over the next two weeks as they try to compete with Man City for second place in the Premier League table as well as continue to progress in the FA Cup and Europa League, so Benitez is going to have to make full use of his squad over the coming days.
