Arsenal Eye £40m Double Swoop

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is ready to trigger Mario Gotze’s £30m release clause at the end of the season while he’s also lining up a £10m move for Etienne Capoue

Despite the transfer window being closed there is still plenty of gossip doing the rounds in the newspapers so we’ll keep you up-to-date with the latest transfer rumours. Today, Arsenal are ready to spend £40m on two midfielders.

Mario Gotze

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is ready to smash the clubs transfer record by triggering Mario Gotze’s £30m release clause at the end of the season while he’s also lining up a £10m move for Etienne Capoue, according to the Daily Mail.

The report claims Wenger will be armed with a £70m transfer budget this summer – which will have to cover transfer fees and wages – and is understood to have earmarked Gotze and Capoue as his top targets.

Gotze has been with Borussia Dortmund since he was eight years old and has emerged as one of he most highly-rated midfielders in Europe after breaking into the first team in 2010.

The 20-year-old is now a regular fixture in Jurgen Klopps side and played a key role in Dortmund winning successive Bundesliga titles in 2011 and 2012, while he’s also played an important part in helping the Germans to the semi finals of the Champions League this campaign.

However, the Mail claim he has a £30m buy-out clause in his contract that would allow him to leave should a club meet that valuation and it’s understood Arsenal are ready to do so. The newspaper also suggests Wenger is lining up a £10m move for Toulouse midfielder Etienne Capoue to complete what would be a stunning £40m double swoop if we were able to pull it off.

We’ve missed an athletic ball-winner in midfield this season and Capoue could be an excellent signing to fill the void and would provide that physical presence in the middle of the park that we need. Gotze would be something of a ‘dream’ signing but I have my doubts over whether we’ll be able to lure him to the Emirates should we trigger his release clause.

Dortmund are an excellent side and he’s part of the furniture now at the Westfalenstadion so you’d have to question whether he’d be willing to leave the German giants at this point. He’s still young and may want to remain in Germany for another few years before testing himself in another league. Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to see him come to Arsenal this summer but just can’t see it happening.
