Luigi Confirms Talks With Tottenham Over Brazilian Striker

Internacional president Giovanni Luigi claims the club are in talks with Tottenham Hotspur over the signing of striker Leandro Damiao, according to the Express.

Despite the transfer window being closed there is still plenty of gossip doing the rounds in the newspapers so we’ll keep you up-to-date with the latest transfer rumours. Today, Spurs are in talks for Leandro Damiao.

Internacional president Giovanni Luigi claims the club are in talks with Tottenham Hotspur over the signing of striker Leandro Damiao, according to the Express.

The Brazilian striker has emerged as one of South America’s most sought-after hitmen after scoring 82 goals in 143 games for Internacional since joining from Atlético Ibirama in 2010.

The Express suggests Spurs have been long-term admirers of the 23-year-old’s and it’s believed that Damiao came close to moving to White Hart Lane during the January transfer window but his exit was postponed until the summer.

The report claims that Andre Villas-Boas was expected to resurrect his interest at the end of the season but it seems the Londoners have made their move early with Luigi revealing that the Brazilian outfit have already been in talks with Spurs and it’s highly likely that Damiao will play in England next season.

“Recently we talked with Tottenham, Leandro is very likely to play games in England in the coming year,” Luigi is quoted as saying by the Express.

Tottenham have also been boosted after the Internacional supremo effectively ruled out Napoli’s chances of signing the striker, with the Italian outfit criticised for going behind the clubs back to speak directly with Damiao’s agent. Luigi continued:

“On the other hand we can exclude Napoli.

“If a club want a player, they must talk to the president of the club at which that particular player plays, and not just deal with the agent – that is not correct behaviour.”

Spurs have done remarkably well to maintain their push for a top-four finish this season despite not having a regular goal-scoring striker to rely on, with Jermain Defoe and Emmanuel Adebayor only scoring 14 league goals between them so far this term, so a player like Damiao would be a huge asset if they can strike a deal and lure him to north London next season.
