Arsenal In Advanced Talks For Jovetic As Wenger Eyes Two ‘Marquee’ Striker Signings

Arsenal are in talks with Fiorentina over the signing of Stevan Jovetic with Arsene Wenger also looking to add a second marquee striker to his squad this summer

With the summer transfer window set to re-open, there is plenty of gossip doing the rounds in the newspapers so we’ll keep you up-to-date with the latest transfer rumours. Today, Arsenal are in advanced talks for Stevan Jovetic.

Stevan Jovetic

Arsenal are in advanced talks with Fiorentina over the signing of Stevan Jovetic with Arsene Wenger also looking to add a second marquee striker to his squad this summer, according to Goal.com.

The report claims we opened preliminary talks with the Italians a number of weeks ago and have now stepped up our interest after Fiorentina made it clear they would be willing to cash in on the 23-year-old this summer.

Jovetic has enjoyed an impressive season, scoring 12 goals in 26 appearances so far, and the report suggests Fiorentina value him at between £25-£30m, but we’re expected to go in and open the bidding at around £17m with Wenger understood to be confident of sealing a deal for less than £20m – but any transfer would be dependent on us qualifying for the Champions League next season.

While many Arsenal fans won’t be surprised to here we’re in for Jovetic, it may come as something of a shock to learn that Goal.com are claiming the boss is in fact looking to sign TWO top-drawer forwards at the end of the season and is believed to have his eye on either Robert Lewandowski and Edin Dzeko as well.

Lewandowski has emerged as one of the most sought-after strikers in Europe this season with several big clubs linked with the Polish international, so I personally don’t see us being able to compete with them for his signature.

Dzeko is an interesting one as he’s certainly a talent and has Premier League experience, but if he leaves City he’s going to want regular first team football wherever he goes. If we’re looking to sign two strikers this summer then Dzeko would have some serious competition for a starting spot at the Emirates.

Say we did sign Jovetic and Dzeko, that would mean we’d have those two plus Olivier Giroud vying for a single starting spot as the lone front man – unless Wenger is going to change formation to play two up top. Plus Lukas Podolski and Theo Walcott also fancy themselves as central strikers, so suddenly we’d have a variety of options and may struggle to keep them all happy.

I have no idea if Goal.com’s report is accurate or not but personally I think one marquee striker will be enough this summer and we should spend the money elsewhere, such as a defensive midfielder, experienced goalkeeper and a utility defender.
