Chelsea have made contact with Manchester United and Wayne Rooney’s representatives to declare their interest in signing the unsettled striker this summer with Roman Abramovich ready to sanction a £30m deal, according to the Mirror.

With Sir Alex Ferguson confirming his retirement at the end of the season, David Moyes is the heavy odds-on favourite to replace the 71-year-old Scot and his first job could be to try and persuade Rooney to remain at Old Trafford.

Sky Sports are reporting that Manchester United have confirmed Rooney held talks with Sir Alex Ferguson two weeks ago and asked to leave the club at the end of the season due to concerns over being played out of position and being left out of the starting eleven for key games, but a club spokesman told the news outlet that the striker was “not for sale”.

It seems Chelsea are now ready to offer Rooney a way out of Old Trafford with the Mirror suggesting owner Roman Abramovich has already sanctioned a £30m move for the 27-year-old and the Blues are understood to have already made contact with United and Rooney’s representatives to declare their interest.

Bayern Munich are also believed to be keen on taking Rooney to Germany but the report claims that Chelsea are confident they can lure him to Stamford Bridge as the striker would prefer to remain in the Premier League.

Rooney has just two years left to run on his current contract at Old Trafford so the club could force him to stay for another year and still sell him for a sizable fee next summer if he remains unhappy. However, it’s unlikely any new manager is going to want to keep hold of an unhappy player – no matter how talented – so we could yet see Rooney end up a Chelsea player this summer if the champions agree to sell to their rivals.

The signing would be a real coup for the west Londoners and Rooney may be the final piece in the jigsaw to make them real title contenders again.
