Gonzalo Higuain has agreed to join Arsenal on a five-year contract after the Gunners struck a €22m (£18.5m) deal with Real Madrid for the Argentinean hitman, according to Spanish outlet Sport.es.

The report claims north London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham have been showing an interest in the 25-year-old, while Higuain’s agent has also held talks with Italian champions Juventus over a potential move to Serie A.

However, the striker is believed to have opted for a move to the Premier League and Sport.es claim he has reached an agreement with Arsenal that will see him move to the Emirates on a five-year deal after a €22m (£18.5m) fee was agreed between the two clubs – but the transfer is dependent on Arsenal qualifying for the Champions League next season.

Tottenham are currently sitting in that all-important fourth spot after a 2-1 win over Stoke on Sunday but Arsenal will reclaim pole position with victory over Wigan on Tuesday night before heading into the final weekend. If Arsene Wenger’s men slip up, the report claims any move for Higuain will be off and he could end up joining Spurs instead.

The Argentina international joined Real Madrid from River Plate in 2007 and has scored an impressive 120 goals and provided 45 assists in 262 appearances. However, he’s lost his first team place to Karim Benzema this season and Madrid general manager, Jose Angel Sanchez, confirming recently that the striker will be sold at the end of the season.

‘In a great club like Real, we believe we need two number nines of a high level. We have Benzema and Higuain, Higuain will leave, Benzema will stay and two others will come.’ Sanchez is quoted as saying in the Daily Mail.

As Arsenal and Tottenham battle it out for that vital fourth spot it seems the team that comes out on top may not just qualify for the Champions League next season, they may also get their hands on one of the deadliest striker’s in the world.

It’s in Arsenal’s hands and if this report is accurate, they’re the one’s who’ve got an agreement in place to sign Higuain if all goes to plan. But failure to beat Wigan and Newcastle will not only see the Gunners finish fifth, it may also mean a top transfer target joins their bitter rivals as well.
