Arsenal are serious about trying to sign Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney and staff identified the England ace as a potential target back in March, according to the Daily Mail.

Rooney has seen his future come under scrutiny after being left out of Sir Alex Ferguson’s final game in charge at Old Trafford against Swansea last weekend, with the retiring Scot confirming the 27-year-old has asked to leave the club this summer.

Several top clubs have been linked with a move for Rooney in recent days but a surprise name to be credited with interest is Arsenal, with the Mail claiming Arsene Wenger is deadly serious about trying to land the striker this summer and he and his staff discussed the possibility of bringing him to the Emirates at a meeting back in March.

Wenger will now have been boosted after hearing the former Everton man wants out of Old Trafford this summer and the report claims the Londoners are not afraid to try and sign one of United’s most notable players just 12 months after letting captain Robin van Persie make the move to Manchester in a deal that angered Gooners up and down the country.

The newspaper suggests the Gunners are confident they could pay the required transfer fee – with Wenger believed to be armed with a £70m transfer kitty this summer – but the major stumbling block is trying to match the £250,000-a-week wages Rooney’s currently on at Old Trafford and senior officials at the Emirates know they can’t compete with the likes of Chelsea on the financial front.

While a move for Rooney remains highly unlikely, the simple fact that Arsenal are targetting a player of his quality and price-bracket, and have discussed the possibility of signing him at senior level, should give Arsenal fans confidence that Wenger is finally ready to spend some serious money to bring top quality players to the club this summer.
