New Manchester United manager David Moyes will struggle to convince Wayne Rooney to remain at Old Trafford with the striker said to be ‘intent’ on leaving this summer, according to the Express.

Rooney has seen his United career go off the rails after falling out-of-favour under former boss Sir Alex Ferguson during the final stages of last season. The report claims the 27-year-old was left anger at being left out of United’s crucial Champions League clash against Real Madrid – which was one of six games Rooney was benched for and he was substituted in another 10 during the run-in.

This culminated in the England hitman verbally asking for a transfer earlier this month, before he knew Ferguson was due to retire at the end of the season, and it was hoped that he would have a change of heart once he learned former boss David Moyes would take over this summer.

However, the Express claim Rooney remains determined to move on despite the change of management with the former Everton ace feeling it’s time for a new challenge after nine years at Old Trafford. But he may not have as many options as he might expect.

The newspaper suggests Arsenal and Chelsea and keeping tabs on his situation and may be prepared to offer Rooney a way out of United and remain in England, but the champions are understood to be unwilling to sell to a Premier League rival and the report suggests his options abroad look limited.

Rooney has two years left on his current contract, meaning this a pivotal summer in deciding his future as Moyes will not want an unsettled player potentially undermining his first season in charge at Old Trafford while United officials may be reluctant to allow the striker to run down his contract to it’s final year.

So if Rooney has his mind set on leaving, the Express suggest Moyes is likely to sell if an offer of around £30m comes in and it’s going to be extremely interesting to see where he ends up. Chelsea would surely be considered the favourites and Arsenal an outside bet if he was to remain in England, while there are only a small number of foreign clubs who could afford his price-tag and wage demands.
