Arsenal are ready to smash their wage structure to try and lure unsettled Man United striker Wayne Rooney to the Emirates this summer, according to reports.

An interesting report from the Daily Mail today who are claiming that Arsenal are ready to smash their wage structure to try and lure unsettled Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney to the Emirates this summer.

Rooney’s future has been thrown into doubt after Sir Alex Ferguson revealed the striker has asked to leave the club for the second time in three years, with the 27-year-old understood to be frustrated at being left out of several big games and constantly being substituted during the second half of last season.

It seems Arsenal may be ready to offer him a way out with the Mail claiming they are growing increasingly confident they can finance a record-breaking deal for the England ace and while Arsene Wenger privately acknowledges they won’t be able to match the £250,000-a-week Rooney currently earns at United, the club are hopeful they could secure the striker with the offer of a five-year deal worth £200,00-a-week and the promise of a sizable signing on fee.

The potential deal would smash the Gunners wage structure, with Theo Walcott and Lukas Podolski believed to be the clubs current highest earners on about £100,000-a-week, but it seems Wenger will be far more adventurous in the transfer market this summer with the clubs coffers boosted by recent commercial and sponsorship deals.

To many fans, the idea of Rooney leaving the Premier League champions to join Arsenal seems more than a little far fetched. However, it may not be as ridiculous as it sounds. If Rooney really is feeling under-appreciated at United and determined to leave this summer, will he want to move abroad? He’s just had a second child, will be want to uproot his young family and move to a new country? It’s unlikely.

If he wants to remain in the Premier League, there aren’t many clubs with the kind of money needed to sign him. The likes of Chelsea and man City appear to be concentrating on other targets, so Rooney’s options may end up being limited to just Arsenal and if the Mail report is accurate and they’re willing to offer him a five-year deal worth £200,000-a-week, it might prove to be a tempting proposition – especially given the fact Rooney would be guaranteed first team football at the Emirates and would be the ‘main man’ again.

I think this is one worth keeping an eye on over the coming months but if I was a betting man, I’d still back Rooney to be at Man Utd next season. Whether the fans will forgive him again for asking to leave is another story though.
